White Electrical Socket

This month we look at the common household electrical issues that we often attend, and let you know what you can look at to help diagnose and when you should call qualified electrical contractors such as the Flodman Electricals Team.
Always think Safety First! Before attempting any electrical troubleshooting, always turn off the power to the affected circuit at the breaker box. If you are uncomfortable or unsure about any step, call a licensed electrician.
These are the most common issues we encounter in households across Farnborough and surrounding area, and this is what you can and cannot do:
1. Lights Not Working:
  • Check the bulb: Make sure the bulb is screwed in tightly and not burnt out. Try a new bulb of the same wattage.
  • Check the switch: Ensure the switch is turned on and not faulty. Look for any visible damage to the switch.
  • Check the circuit breaker: A tripped breaker could be the culprit. Locate the breaker box and identify the breaker for the affected light fixture. Reset the tripped breaker but if it trips again immediately, there might be a bigger issue Something a qualified electrician should look at.

2. Flickering Lights:
  • Loose bulb: Tighten the bulb securely in the socket.
  • Loose connection: Flickering can indicate a loose connection in the switch or fixture. If this look to be the case, do not attempt to repairs yourself – call us or other qualified electricians
  • Dimming switch: If you have a dimmer switch, ensure it's functioning properly by adjusting the knob and ensure that it is compatible with the bulb type you have fitted

3. Warm Outlets or Switches:
  • Danger Zone! This is a serious issue that can lead to electrical fires. Immediately turn off the power to the circuit and call a professional electrician. .

4. Tripped Circuit Breaker:
  • Overloaded circuit: Unplug unnecessary appliances from the circuit. If the problem persists, consider calling an electrician so that they can evaluate the circuit load.
  • Faulty appliance: Identify the appliance that trips the breaker by plugging them in one by one. A culprit appliance might need repair or replacement.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) trip: These outlets are common in kitchens and bathrooms. Reset the GFCI button. If it trips repeatedly, consult an electrician.

5. Dead Outlets:
  • Tripped breaker: Check the breaker box as mentioned above.
  • Switched outlet: Ensure the controlling switch, if any, is turned on.
  • Faulty outlet: If other outlets on the circuit work, the outlet itself might be damaged. This will definitely require a professionals attention
