Electrical Safety
The Flodman Electrical Team help tens of homeowners across Farnborough and surrounding areas, with their domestic and household electrics.
This month we share what we believe are the most common (of what often seems like and endless list) of issues and projects we encounter - And we explain why you should always call a qualified electricians if you are have one of them.
  • Tripping Circuit Breakers: This safety feature cuts power when overloaded. Occasional tripping might be normal, but frequent tripping suggests a problem like overloading a circuit with too many appliances or faulty wiring.

  • Suspicious Sockets and Switches: Buzzing noises, hot switches, or discolored sockets all indicate potential problems and no attempt to repair should ever be attempted by someone unqualified.
  • Tingling Shocks: Even a mild shock from a switch or socket is a warning sign and shouldn't be ignored. It could be the appliance, the wiring, or the socket itself.
  • Burning Smells: This is a serious issue and could indicate overheating wires or overloaded circuits. It's important to turn off the power and call an electrician immediately.
  • Flickering Lights: While occasional flickering might be normal, persistent flickering could indicate loose wiring, a faulty bulb, or a failing switch.
  • Exposed or Damaged Wiring: Frayed or exposed wires are dangerous and should be addressed by a qualified electrician right away.
  • Lighting problems: This includes flickering or dimming lights, lights that don't work at all, or buzzing sounds coming from light fixtures.
  • Outlet issues: If your outlets are not working, sparking, or feel warm to the touch, it's important to call an electrician. This could be a sign of overloaded circuits or faulty wiring.
  • Old wiring: Homes with knob-and-tube wiring or aluminum wiring should be inspected by a qualified electrician to ensure they are safe for modern electrical loads.
  • Electrical panel problems: If you see any signs of rust, corrosion, or burning on your electrical panel, call an electrician immediately. This could be a fire hazard.
  • Planning electrical work: If you're planning any renovations or additions to your home that involve electrical work, it's important to hire a qualified electrician to ensure the work is done safely and up to code.
We are aware that no one wants to spend money if they do not have to, and while DIY electrical repairs might seem tempting to save money, the risks are simply too high. And there are additional reasons that you may not have thought of, for always using a qualified electrician to do the work.
  • Safety First: Electricity is incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. Our Electricians have the training and knowledge to handle electrical systems safely, minimizing the risk of electric shock, fire, and serious injury.
  • Expertise and Efficiency: Electrical problems can be tricky to diagnose for someone without experience. Our contractors can quickly identify the issue and have the expertise to fix it efficiently, saving you time and frustration.
  • Quality Work and Peace of Mind: As qualified electricians will ensure the electrical work in your home adheres to all the relevant UK regulations and safety standards. This gives you peace of mind knowing your home's electrical system is up to code and safe for your family.
  • Insurance and Liability: In the unfortunate event of an accident due to faulty electrics, our team have the correct insurance and can protect you from liability claims.
  • Future Considerations: If you plan on selling your home in the future, some potential buyers may require proof that electrical work was done by a qualified professional. We can provide that.
A qualified electrician can ensure your home's electrical system is safe and efficient.
If you're unsure whether you need to call an electrician, it's always better to be safe than sorry.  At Flodman Electrical, our electrical contractors are fully trained and can diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
