The Chill in the Air: Your October Electrical Checklist

As the days get shorter and the evenings draw in, our reliance on electricity skyrockets. From extra lighting to heating systems, October is the month when your home's electrical system starts working overtime. At Flodman Electrical, we’re committed to helping our Farnborough neighbours stay safe and powered up. This month, we're focusing on the most common electrical issues that pop up as we head into autumn and how you can prepare.
Problem 1: Tripping Circuits
That sudden darkness isn't just a mood killer—it's a warning sign. A circuit breaker "tripping" is its way of preventing an overload. This happens when the circuit is drawing more power than it's designed to handle.

Why it happens in October:
 * You've just switched on your electric heater for the first time in months.
 * You're using more high-wattage appliances simultaneously, like a kettle, a microwave, and a fan heater.
 * Your lights are now on for longer periods.
What to do:
Before you call us, try unplugging some devices from the circuit and resetting the breaker. If it keeps tripping, it could indicate a deeper issue like a faulty appliance or, more seriously, a wiring fault. Don't ignore it—call a professional to investigate.

Problem 2: Flickering Lights
Flickering lights are a classic sign of an electrical problem. It could be as simple as a loose bulb, but it can also be a symptom of something more serious.
Why it happens in October:
 * More lights are in use, putting a strain on older circuits.
 * The connections in your lighting circuit may be loose or corroded due to age.
What to do:
First, check the bulb. If it's secure and the flickering continues, it's time to get it checked. A professional electrician can inspect the wiring and connections to ensure there isn't a hazardous fault.

Problem 3: The Perils of Old Extension Leads
Many of us dig out old extension leads and multi-plugs to power our growing collection of indoor appliances and lamps. However, these can be a fire risk, especially if they are old or damaged.
Why it happens in October:
 * Increased use of temporary power sources for heaters, extra lighting, and dehumidifiers.
What to do:
Inspect your extension leads for any signs of damage:
 * Cracked plastic.
 * Exposed wires.
 * Discoloured or melted sections.
Never "daisy-chain" extension leads by plugging one into another, as this dramatically increases the risk of overload and fire. Consider having new sockets installed by a qualified electrician to safely accommodate your needs.

Stay Safe This Autumn
Don't let a small electrical issue become a major problem. As the weather gets colder, your electrical system needs to be in top condition. Whether you need a simple inspection, a new socket installed, or a full system check, Flodman Electrical is here to help. Contact us today to ensure your home is safe and ready for the season ahead.
