Electrical Safety for Kids: Keeping Your Children Safe

This month we look at how you can keep your youngsters safe at home and ensure electrical accidents can be avoided.
Electricity powers our homes, lights up our nights, and keeps us entertained, but it can also be dangerous if not treated with respect, especially by youngsters!  
​Here are some key points to keep your little ones safe around electricity:​

Teach the Basic Rules:

• Off-Limits: Explain that outlets and cords are off-limits for touching or sticking things in. Use clear and simple language like "Electricity makes us ouch, so we leave it alone."
• Water and Electricity Don't Mix: Water conducts electricity, so never use electrical appliances near water, and always have dry hands when touching plugs or switches.
• The Power of "Off": Teach them to turn off switches and unplug devices when not in use.

Outsmart Curiosity:

• Cover Up: Use outlet covers on unused outlets, but remember these are not foolproof solutions and adult supervision is still important. If you are unsure what covers can be used, then please get in touch with the team at Flodman Electrical and we will be more than happy to advise.
• Cord Control: Keep cords out of reach and untangled. Teach them not to yank on cords to unplug something.
• Appliance Awareness: Explain that some appliances get hot, so they shouldn't touch toasters, irons, or hair dryers without an adult present.

Beyond the Basics:

• Power Lines and Danger Zones: Explain that power lines and electrical boxes outside are extremely dangerous and to never touch them or climb trees near them.
• Broken Cords or Sparks: Let them know to tell an adult immediately if they see a damaged cord, sparks, or any electrical issue. F you do find that issues like this are present then please get in touch with us and one of our electrical contractors can visit and rectify to remove the risk.
• Fun Learning: There are many child-friendly resources available online and in libraries about electrical safety. Look for games, songs, or coloring pages that make learning fun.

Remember:

• Lead by Example: Be mindful of your own electrical habits around your children. Don't overload outlets or use damaged cords.
• Open Communication: Encourage your children to ask questions and express any concerns they may have about electricity.
• Regular Reminders: Safety reminders are crucial. Briefly discuss electrical safety rules at regular intervals.

By following these tips and fostering open communication, you can help your children develop a healthy respect for electricity and stay safe in your home. And remember it is not just children that are at risk, adults are often guilty of trying to do a DIY fix on electrics, without knowing the full dangers.
